Ocean scientists studying sediments gathered off of the coast of South Carolina have found new evidence that a meteorite smashed into the Caribbean some 65 million years ago, forming the Chicxulub impact crater and wiping out many of Earth's species. Researchers returning from a winter expedition of the Ocean Drilling Program announced in mid-February that they had found a signature of the impact more than 1600 km from the crater itself.
