Jovian desert and light show

  • Elaine Friebele

The water content of Jupiter varies at least as much as moisture varies between Earth's deserts and rainforests, according to new images and data from the Galileo spacecraft. That variation might explain why Galileo's atmospheric probe found less water than expected when it was dropped into the Jovian atmosphere in December 1995. Members of the Galileo science team suspected that the probe landed in the “Sahara Desert of Jupiter.”
