A recent article in Eos (May 13, 1997, p. 199), “Conference on the Magnetization of the Oceanic Crust Steers Future Research,” made reference to certain geomagnetic data held by the U.S. Navy. The authors expressed concern for the safekeeping of the data mentioned above. Their concern was apparently predicated on the belief that these data are being stored only on aging magnetic tapes. This is not the case. The geomagnetic data, held by the Naval Oceanographic Office, are stored in multiple copies on several different stable media, including on-line storage in our relatively new Integrated Database Management System.
