Scientists and senators call for doubling of science budget

Leaders of 106 scientific and engineering organizations last week called on the U.S. government to double the federal budget for research by the year 2009.

The groups, which include AGU and represent about 3 million scientists, engineers, and mathematicians, called for a “decade of investment” in health, environmental, technological and other research, beginning in fiscal year 1999. This request followed a call made earlier this year by about 40 scientific societies and research organizations for a 7% increase in the federal fiscal year 1998 science research budget.
