Abstract

Studies of the Earth's radiation belts were among the first in situ space experiments in the late 1950s, the 1960s, and the early 1970s. A series of annual McCormack-conferences were held during those early years. After that the field received less attention and decreasing resources; during the late 1970s and the 1980s radiation belt physics were discussed at only a few topical conferences. However, the fields of radiation belt and ring current research experienced a small renaissance during the 1990s.
