Panelists urge scientists to become involved in public policy issues

Abstract

Most sessions at the recent AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco focused on the presentation of scientific information. However, two special sessions organized by AGU's Committee on Public Affairs (COPA) delved into the role of geoscientists in the public policy arena. Panelists explored the sometimes touchy area of scientists as activists, and generally came out in favor of the need for scientists to not only conduct good science but try to see that their work and the overall importance of geoscience actually is incorporated into public policy decisions.
