Abstract

More than one-quarter of the world's coral reefs are at high risk and another one-third are at medium risk because of threats caused by human activities, according to a new report that may be the first systematic and data-driven global assessment of coral reefs.

The report, “Reefs at Risk: A Map-Based Indicator of Threats to the World's Coral Reefs,” indicates that these threats place much of the world's marine biodiversity at risk, because coral reefs are highly productive, species-rich habitats that are home to more than one quarter of all known marine fish species.
