Proclamation establishes American Heritage Rivers

U.S. President Bill Clinton stood by the banks of the New River in North Carolina on July 30 to sign a proclamation recognizing that waterway and 13 others as the first designated “American Heritage Rivers.”

The designations are part of the Clinton Administration's American Heritage Rivers Initiative to help communities protect rivers and their corridors in ways that integrate natural resource conservation and economic development with the preservation of historical and cultural values.
