Abstract

David Breed Beard, known for his pioneering work in planetary magnetospheres and other space physics topics, died on January 21,1998, in Portland, Maine, after a weeklong bout with pneumonia. A longtime member and fellow of AGU and the American Physical Society, David Beard served as chairman of the Department of Physics and Astronomy, University of Kansas, from 1964 through 1977. Following his long tenure as chairman, David Beard served as a University Distinguished Professor of Physics until his retirement in 1987. He would have been 76 years old on February 1.
