Abstract

Although the oceans cover 70% of the Earth's surface, scientists and the public are just beginning to understand this vast realm's role in human health. And oceanic influences reach far beyond pollution and food supply.

A new report by the Ocean Studies Board of the National Research Council attempts to pull together an overview of many of the positive and negative influences of ocean phenomena on human health—aside from pollution, which the board said was beyond its scope and has been handled in many other reports.
