A network of ground-based instruments to determine the surface flux of UV radiation and its long-term changes over the United States has been implemented jointly by a number of U.S. government agencies. The network will provide quantitative information about the flux of UV radiation at the Earth's surface for studies in atmospheric science and to assist human health and ecological effects research. The focus is on the biologically important UVB region (290–320 nm).

The network uses three different types of instruments—broadband radiometers, narrowband filter instruments, and highly spectrally resolved spectrophotometers—and has a total of 66 instruments at 55 locations. Consistency is assured across the network through new standard calibration procedures and the collocation of instruments of different types.
