Abstract

Trees and other plants have, of course, long been useful for the wood and agricultural benefits they provide. Now, this organic matter is gaining new cachet as “biomass.”

Some scientists hope that this stuff can be converted into practically a panacea of goods, including transportation fuels, electricity, commercial products such as chemicals, glues, and paints, and other materials—reducing societal dependence on petrochemical products.
