Abstract

Capturing carbon dioxide produced by fossil fuels and injecting it into geologic formations below the Earth's surface is technically feasible, but new scientific challenges are raised by longterm sequestration. The sequestering concept is one proposed strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere.

Sequestering could be either on land or in the oceans and should be for a minimum of 50–100 years, but 1000 years would be better, the report says. It discusses fundamental geoscience research issues associated with sequestration and is organized around perspectives from geophysics, geohydrology, geochemistry, and geomechanics.
