A detailed account of the osteology and myology of the Weddell seal (Leptonychotes weddelli) is given. From both osteological and myological standpoints, the close relationship between Leptonychotes and other phocids is obviously confirmed. If compared with Phoca, this seal shows interesting adaptative modifications: a shortened cervical vertebral segment, a musculoaponeurotic mechanism acting on the trachea and the esophagus, and limbs better adapted for propulsion.
