Summary

Interactions between macro-and microorganisms involve biogeochemical and ecological consequences of macrobiological and microbiological activity as well as feedback mechanisms controlling the abundance and diversity of benthic microbial, meiofauna, macrofauna, and plant communities. This volume attempts to combine field observations with experimental and model results to present the current knowledge and the latest discoveries about how marine macroorganisms, ranging from rooted mangrove trees to deep-sea fauna, interact with the many microorganisms in the nearby sediment. The interactions range from predation through nonobligatory commensalism, mutualism, and competition to strictly symbiotic systems. The chapters are divided into five thematic sections devoted either to particular types of organisms or to particular communities.
