Transactions has not merely changed its appearance; with this issue it assumes a revitalized role in the AGU family of publications. The new name on the cover is symbolic of this role: Eos, the Greek goddess of the dawn, represents for us the new light continually being shed by basic geophysical research on the understanding of our planet and its environment in space. E⊕S will be used to draw scientists in the diverse specialties of geophysics together so that they may address themselves, with ever broadening perspective, not only to questions arising from their laboratory or field research but also to questions raised by the influence of their work on programs affecting the lives of people. Articles that reflect responsible concern for the political, economic, and legal implications of scientific research are actively solicited, as are articles that keep us up to date by reviewing exciting developments in geophysics.
