Plastic hoops covered with polyethlene sheets are being used in one of three experiments with mechanical evaporation barriers. The Illinois State Water Survey is conducting experiments in an effort to reduce evaporation which, in Illinois, can total 44 billion gallons of water on an average day. The current project involves covering portions of small lakes with hoops. A second technique involves the use of a chemical substance contained within a lattice of interconnected hoops.
