Abstract

Under the National Science Foundation's Sea Grant Program, Louisiana State University received a $198,000 grant for the current year to develop a broadly based program in the marine sciences. The university's new Office of Sea Grant Development has been established to instrument a program that includes the development of a graduate degree program with interdisciplinary studies leading to both the M. S. and Ph. D. degrees in the new Department of Marine Sciences. Most research funds will be used in projects to develop coastal area resources. For this purpose a Gulf Coast camp site has been established for research on commercially significant fish and shellfish and their coastal environment.
