Abstract

Shortly after completing a 57,200 mile globe-circling cruise, Scripps Institution of Oceanography's research vessel Argo left San Diego in March on an 11½-month 38,340 mile expedition within the Pacific Ocean. Scientists and technicians aboard the ship will study and select 36 sea-floor sites that will provide the best geological conditions for the drilling ship Glomar Challenger as she conducts the Pacific Ocean phase of the Deep Sea Drilling Project. Argo will traverse the north and south Pacific Ocean in a counter-clockwise direction.
