A six-week study of severe storms was conducted this spring by the Department of Commerce's Environmental Science Services Administration. Based at the National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Oklahoma, the program emphasized collection of urban data and studies of new radar instrumentation. This research is expected to contribute to an understanding of storm origins and to aid in the development of more efficient short-term weather predictions for airports. Air Force, Army, and NASA teams, and aircraft from the Canadian National Research Council participated in the observation program.
