Abstract

During August a launch crew from the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colorado, will embark on another series of high altitude superpressure balloon flights from Ascension Island in the South Atlantic. Four balloons will be launched to float at the 30-mb level (24 km) and three at 50 mb (20.8 km). These balloon evaluation flights are preliminary to the forthcoming Nimbus D/IRLS balloon-satellite experiment, wherein the satellite will perform the balloon tracking and location in order to determine upper wind trajectories in the equatorial regions. In January 1969, eight similar balloons were launched from Ascension.
