Abstract

‘Forum’ has seen a procession of discussions on the subject of professional communication, the chief burden of which has been the need to establish a level of scientific reporting within the Union that can be properly appraised and readily assimilated by the members. This seems to imply increasing efforts to maintain high quality in presentations, and to reduce repetition of reports to a minimum. Some discussants (such as Zurflueh and Roederer in the May ‘Forum’) have suggested that an increased use of preprints and other ‘semi-publications’ should be considered in order to lessen the flood of presentations in meetings and journals. I should like to pursue this suggestion further.
