Users of AGU periodicals are probably aware of the fact that the Union copyrights its publications. Copyright serves a dual purpose in AGU journals; first, to prevent misuse of the material in the journal through the regulation of its use and form; and second, to protect the financial interests of the publishing operation. Since January 1969 the insertion of a copyright notice on the first page of each article has called this fact to the attention of most readers. There were a number of reasons for instituting this procedure, among them to ensure that the copyright is protected when reprints are distributed, and to alert ‘xerographers’ to the fact that there is some question about the propriety of their actions.
