Pictures from space, such as this one showing the sun's reflection on the waters around several Indian Ocean islands, are becoming increasingly useful to marine scientists. The U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office believes such pictures reveal complex ocean surface phenomena which are impossible to view by ordinary means. Close study of the photograph has helped oceanographers to discern water mass movements, including currents and waves.
