A new concept in under-ice petroleum exploration has been described by Marine Resources, Inc., called UNITOW. The system consists of a vehicle oneand-one-half feet wide by 12 feet long that will be submerged through a 24-inch hole drilled in the ice pack. The vehicle will tow a cable up to one mile to a second, predetermined hole, A series of hydrophones on a following cable will be pulled between the two holes. These will be used as the detectors with conventional seismic sources. The vehicle is battery-operated and steered by a combination of gyro and acoustic homing signals.
