Proposed hot oil pipeline

The Department of the Interior has released a report by the U.S. Geological Survey analyzing the potential effects of a proposed hot oil pipeline buried in Alaska's permafrost. Arthur H. Lachenbruch, author of the report, indicates that it is concerned with identifying potential problems before they occur, and that if the pipeline is properly designed, constructed, and maintained in compliance with the design, these problems will not occur. The proposed pipeline would be constructed from Alaska's North Slope petroleum fields south to the ice-free port of Valdez, a distance of approximately 800 miles. Some conclusions are given below.
