William Bowie Medal to Bernhard Haurwitz

  • Henry G. Houghton,

  • Bernhard Haurwitz

Bernhard Haurwitz's career spans the entire period of modern meteorology beginning with his Ph.D. in Leipzig in 1927. For more than four decades he has been a recognized leader in dynamic meteorology as he is today. In reviewing his scientific work one is reminded of the breadth of his interests which have included the physics of the high atmosphere, atmospheric tides, physical oceanography, radiative transfer, and climatology. This breadth of scientific interests was one of the reasons for the unanimous selection of Haurwitz for the Bowie Medal by our committee.
