The College of Engineering at Louisiana State University is now offering a college-wide survey course in environmental engineering. It deals with technology and human ecology. The objective of the course is to develop a general understanding of the earth's physical system and processes and the effects of man's interaction with this system. The earth sciences are presented in sufficient detail to enable the student to properly understand the impact of pollution and other destructive influences on the land, water, and air systems. Problems and engineering solutions of water and air pollution, solid waste disposal, and other critical environmental stresses are reviewed. A major theme of the course is the environmental interaction between various elements of the total system. Physiological, psychological, and sociological influences of environmental changes on man are considered. The role of local, state, and national government in preserving the quality of the environment is also examined.
