Peruvian earthquake preliminary investigation

The ESSA Coast and Geodetic Survey has issued a report on a preliminary field investigation of the May 31 Peruvian earthquake. In terms of lives lost it was the most disastrous in Latin American history and perhaps in the history of the western hemisphere. At least 50,000 persons died as a result of building collapse and a giant avalanche of ice and mud. The report was prepared by S. T. Algermissen of the ESSA Coast and Geodetic Survey Geophysics Research Group, who was one of the first scientists to reach the more remote regions affected by the earthquake.
