A program of chemical and biological studies consistent with the large-scale objectives of the International Field Year for the Great Lakes has been initiated in response to many urgings to broaden the scope of Field Year activities. The new program, prepared cooperatively by scientists from several universities concerned with biological and chemical aspects of the Great Lakes, is being proposed for implementation by the Smithsonian Institution.

The Smithsonian Oceanography and Limnology Program, recognizing the opportunity presented by the Field Year for an integrated study of biological, chemical and physical processes and phenomena of one of the Great Lakes, has agreed to seek the support necessary to develop the required program and to serve in the capacity of program manager for the field investigations and subsequent analyses. The Smithsonian's proposal is now being considered in the Department of the Interior.
