Astronauts will help scientists at the U.S. Naval Oceanographic Office to develop methods of predicting sea states and mass water movements by experimenting with four oceanographic sensors aboard Skylab A, a billion-dollar, earth-orbiting laboratory to be launched in late 1972 or early 1973. The astronauts' experiments will eventually lead to the development of functional sensors geared to detect surface phenomena contributing to wave propagation and mass water movements on a global, uninterrupted basis.
