Abstract

A joint U.S.-USSR scientific program will study the structure and form of auroral ‘substorms.’ The NSF has granted $24,600 to the University of Alaska, College, to permit the university's Geophysical Institute to carry out the U.S. portion of the program The Geophysical Institute will cooperate with the Institute of the Physics of the Earth (IPE) of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR in the program.

Auroral substorms are magnetic storms that occur throughout the earth's outer atmosphere at high latitudes. They cause radio blackouts, clutter on radar, and brilliant displays of the aurora borealis.
