Abstract

An unusual map, portraying the light-refleeting characteristics (albedo) of the moon, has just been published by the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior. The albedo map, measuring 34×34 inches, features a spectrum of 20 different colors that depict brightness variations on the lunar surface under full-moon illumination. The color coding on the map, which is a by-product of intensive studies of lunar geology during the past decade by USGS astrogeologists on behalf of NASA, will be a useful tool in advancing geologic interpretations.
