I was very much interested in the editorial, "Science for the People" (A.F. Spilhaus, Jr., February President's Page). Certainly there is a great deal of misunderstanding by legislative bodies at all levels concerning the nature of research and the necessity for it in our modern technologically supported civilization. In particular, I think there is a wide failure to distinguish among kinds of research. Because of their nature or magnitude, or both, many essential studies must be supported, at least in large part, by public funds.
