Abstract

An increasing concern for the use of all available fresh water, the promise of increased engineering activity in the Arctic, and a growing demand for winter recreation facilities have all served as practical incentives for snow ice research. This research is in the face of various prophecies that pollution of the atmosphere may result in the melting of global snow and ice, perhaps even within the lifetime of many investigators.
