Meteorology of the upper atmosphere

Abstract

The four-year period saw very active work on many aspects of upper atmosphere meteorology: energetics, imposition, thermal structure, and wind systems. Among the most notable achievements, I believe, were the solidification of tidal theory and its successful comparison with observations, the development of the theory of vertical propagation of Rossby waves, the beginnings of a plausible theory of the quasi-biennial escalation, and realistic new models of the structure of the thermosphere, including the effects of winds.
