U.S. production of the approximately 9000 synthetic organic compounds multiplied nearly threefold between 1969 and 1968; the consumption of beryllium increased by 500% between 1948 and 1968. These and other such statistics are the harbingers of greater threats to man's environment, according to the Report of Toxic Substances released by the President's Council on Environmental Quality.
