The U. S. Geological Survey and the American Association of Petroleum Geologists will cosponsor a Symposium on Underground Waste Management and Environmental Implications December 6–9, 1971, at the Astroworld Hotel, Houston, Texas. It will include three days of technical sessions and one full day of field trips to chemical plants in the Houston area to observe surface pretreatment and deep-well waste disposal procedures.
The purpose of the symposium is to assess the current state of knowledge about subsurface waste disposal, to identify problems and areas of uncertainty requiring further investigation, and to anticipate realistic regulatory procedures. Among the principal topics to be discussed in the technical sessions will be hydrogeology, surface pre treatment of fluids, mechanics of injection wells, environmental considerations, and legal aspects.
