Scripps receives funds to construct floating platform for research

Abstract

A $2,280,000 government contract has been awarded to the University of California, San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography for a program of research in advanced oceanographic engineering.

A total of $1,600,000 of this is designated for the initial funds to construct a 15,000 square foot stable floating platform complete with steel superstructure and concrete vertical legs that pivot up to a horizontal position to permit towing to an ocean station. The remaining $680,000 will be allocated to other programs in the area of marine technology.
