Abstract

Scientists from several countries will begin a special satellite observation program next month to determine how much the earth wobbles as it spins in space.

George Weiffenbach, head of Geoastronomy Programs for the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observation in Cambridge, Massachusetts, has announced that his organization would coordinate a fourteen-month effort to measure the Chandler Wobble. Weiffenbach said the Earth-Physics Satellite Observation Campaign (EPSOC) would use precise laser observations of orbiting satellites as the basis for observing the irregular motions in the rotation of the earth.
