The U.S. Geological Survey has announced the establishment of a hydrologic science center at a NASA test facility in southwestern Mississippi.
According to a joint NASA-USGS agreement, a Gulf Coast Hydroscience Center will be set up at NASA's Mississippi Test Facility (MTF), about 50 miles northeast of New Orleans, Louisiana. The 13,428-acre test area was used by NASA to test stages of the Saturn V rocket used in the Apollo program. Beginning in 1973 at MTF, NASA plans to test fire rocket engines to power the Space Shuttle.
