This three-day intensive briefing/discussing/coordinating conference may perhaps be taken as the symbolic date of the beginning of operations in the International Field Year for the Great Lakes. Thus, it was most fitting that the Workshop was held in the modern and superbly equipped facilities of McMaster University.

The Workshop brought together most of the principal participants in the Field Year at a time when each had developed his own plans as far as possible. Extensive briefing sessions on the plans available, interspersed with lively and intense discussion and coordination sessions often continued into the evening.
