Abstract

Approximately 45 scientists gathered at Princeton University on January 24, 1972, for a five-day meeting to plan scientific studies on the mid-Atlantic ridge. Geophysicists front the United States and four foreign countries met under the auspices of the Ocean Science Committee of the National Academy of Sciences with the financial support of the National Science Foundation. A Steering Committee including A. Fischer, J. Heirtzler (Chairman), F. Press, and M. Talwani organized panels on pedogenesis, details of tectonic processes, and geophysical structure. Each panel reviewed our present knowledge, identified major unsolved problems, and indicated methods of solution.
