A Penrose Conference of the Geological Society of America, the first in the field of hydrogeology, was held in September 1971 at the Asilo mar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, California. Nine separate sessions were organized to cover a variety of topics under the general theme. The seventy-four participants included ten young doctoral candidates and postdoctoral fellows and at least fifteen men whom one could classify as mandarins of the science. Sixty-one of the participants came from the United States, six from Canada, three from France, and there were single representatives from Mexico, Israel, England, Iran, and Kuwait.
