The Fourth International Peat Congress was organized by the Finnish National Committee of the International Peat Society under the able leadership of Erkki Kivinen, Committee Chairman and IPS President. Its purpose was to promote international understanding and cooperation on all matters concerning the study and utilization of peatland, peat, and related materials.
The United States delegation included 20 representatives of universities, government agencies, and the peat industry. Six of the more than 150 technical papers were presented by members of the U.S. delegation. In all, more than 450 delegates from 23 countries participated in the Congress.
