Joint symposia on the role of snow and ice in hydrology, sponsored by Unesco and WMO, were convened concurrently in September 1972 at the Banff School of Fine Arts, Banff, Alberta. Opening of the sessions was appropriately marked with an early season snowfall. The Unesco Symposium on Properties and Processes included five sessions as did that convened by WMO, the Symposium on Measurement and Forecasting. More than 200 participants gathered from 13 countries the bulk of them from Canada and the United States. Other countries represented were England, Norway, The Netherlands, Sweden, Finland' France, the USSR, the Federal Republic of Germany, Hungary, Switzerland, and Japan.
