Abstract

Fresh groundwater, leaking from Long Island, N.Y., into the Atlantic Ocean and Long Island Sound, has been detected by air-borne infrared cameras, according to a U.S. Geological Survey report.

The report, one of a number of studies being conducted by hydrologists of the USGS, in cooperation with Long Island water authorities and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, relates that aerial infrared images have revealed significant changes in the temperatures of Long Island streams as the result of man's activities.
