The first phase of a field experiment to control earthquakes has been successfully completed by scientists of the U.S. Geological Survey.

The announcement of the breakthrough in earthquake research was made by USGS scientists C.B. Raleigh and J.H. Healy of the Survey's National Center for Earthquake Research, Menlo Park, California, and J. Bredehoeft, of the agency's Water Resources Division, Denver, Colorado.
