Abstract

High altitude balloon platforms positioned a thousand miles apart have been used successfully in an experiment to establish the feasibility of a technique for propagating medium length radio waves through the D layer, the lower layer of the ionosphere.

The new technique is called the D-Layer Whispering Gallery Mode because of its similarity to the phenomenon of sound waves traveling long distances along the inside of a curved surface.
