A ‘how-to’ handbook, providing a set of recommended methods for gathering and reporting data on the quantity and quality of the nation's water resources, has been released by the U.S. Geological Survey, Department of the Interior.

The result of the combined effort of more than 70 scientists representing 15 federal agencies, the technical report describes and lists selected methods for gathering data on surface water, groundwater, water-borne chemicals, sediments, and bacteria, and includes a section on the use of automatic water quality monitors.
